No synthesizers were harmed in the making of this album....because none were used! Detroit's own dark gaze duo is back on the scene with their new album, "Western Violence". Blending alternative rock with shoegaze and goth rock influences, the duo kicks their musical expression into high gear. The opening and title track, swings and sways with a definitive swagger, as Emily Sturm's voice leads with a fevered pitch. The energy only increases on "Breach", as the march of the previous song gives way into a frantically paced speed run that is juxtaposed by Zach Vazum's baritone growl. "Get Out" channels the greatness of Strange Boutique's reverb drenched sound with manic punk rock energy, creating a roller coaster between verse and chorus that will have you shouting "Get out! We owe you nothing!" along with the band. "Stellium" brings us a chance to catch our breath by slowing the pace down, with an effect soaked cavalcade of guitars and both singers crooning in tandem. With 12 songs and clocking in at almost a whole hour, the songs of "Western Violence", varied though they all are, all carry Vazum's signature sonics. It is so impressive to make an album where not one song sounds the same, but you automatically know who it is based on the way the composition plays out from ear to brain. This is an offering of truly great darkened shoegaze, and easily a top contender for anyone's album of the year.
Standout Tracks: "Blush", Get Out", and "Stellium".
