BRIDES, "Sundown" EP Review

He's no stranger to us here at NotTheAmp, and he is back with his own brand of neo-minimalist post-punk on a 3 song EP. That's right, folks, BRIDES has returned just in time for the best season of the year with his newest effort, "Sundown". Starting off with "Amour" eerie synths and a heavy handed snare beat a rising tattoo as buzzsaw guitars riff over a droning bass. Adrian's usual crooning baritone is alchemically transfigured into a gravelly growl, perfectly fitting with the distortion used on the guitars. "Real Reptile" carries the torch forward with harshly whispered lyrics intertwining with the pounding percussion. The melody of the softly played guitar will haunt you well after the last word slithers from Adrian's mouth (no pun intended). Adrian channels Jim Morrison and Tom Waites in equal parts. "Apocalypse In Slow-Motion" closes out the EP with a funeral dirge of epic proportions. Above the droning bass line and booming kick drum is a delicately strummed acoustic guitar that accompanies the mournful cry of the synthesizers in a tandem dance of sorrow. The instruments fade with Adrian's voice, leaving the beat to carry on until its own dying breath. A perfect close to a near perfect EP, BRIDES proves once more why he is a prolific musical force to be watched closely and not reckoned with.

Standout Tracks: Each and every song. Not a one outshines the other in the best and most synergetic way possible.
