RetCon, "EP 01" Album Review

"No gods, no masters, it's a new day." The opening line says it all, as far as setting the tone for RetCon's newest effort, eponymously titled "EP 01". With atmospheric instrumentals, vocals that brood and croon, and some 8-bit styled beeps and boops, "EP 01" carries a sound that is firmly rooted in the beginnings of the Industrial music movement, with nods to both Kraftwerk and Skinny Puppy. And as their Bandcamp says, RetCon is "firmly rooted in 1988". Hailing from Minneapolis, Minnesota, as part of America's Rust Belt, it is only natural that an Industrial band would spring up from the decaying factories and warehouses. Amongst the ruin, there is always hope, and that seems to be the underlying message sprawling across the soundscapes that thrum within "EP 01".

Standout Track: "Xcommunication"
