The Mile High city of Denver, most known for its unending plethora of bluegrass acts, hides a burgeoning scene of incredible dark music in its underbelly. Redwing Blackbird, with their brand of brooding synth-laden hybridized Goth rock, is one of Denver's best hidden gems. Coming at us with the brand new single, "Black Cloud", we are treated to a dystopian dance track with a stark political warning of an all-too-possible future. Instrumentally, the composition is equal parts sludgy beats and soaring electronics, intertwining in an endless dance of juxtaposition, while the steady beat marches ever onward. Vocalist Paul B delivers and Eldritch-esque baritone that croons, growls, and soars as needed, lending the perfect master stroke to an already exquisitely curated soundscape. His lyrics paint a grim portrait of the blurring of faith and fanaticism, and the ongoing attacks on women's rights that is leading us on a downward spiral towards fascism and mindless nationalism. Redwing Blackbird very clearly remember what Goth was born from, and the unapologetic politics displayed are the perfect middle finger to anyone who says the genre isn't a political one. If "Black Cloud" is but a taste of what is to come, I am so ready for what they have in store next.
