Imagine if you will, that every 80's dystopian sci-fi flick's soundtrack made their way into the present, keeping the campiness that made them great, but with a slicker production. Can you hear it? If not, then give Nikk Fail's new EP, "Futuro Presente" a listen, and you'll know exactly what I meant. Synth heavy, and full of unusual structuring to the compositions, the Milan, Italy electro-punk project deviates from what is usually expected from the genre in the most spectacular fashion. Never following any sort of "un-tss" club-style beats, the rhythm section is a constantly changing, ever-present force that forms the backbone of the music. The synthesizers and electronics are rich in their sounds, and move perfectly in tandem with the breakneck beats. Starting off with a lush instrumental, title track "Futuro Presente" sets the mood, but does not divulge the surprises we are in for. "Supervillain" is absolutely anthemic in its vitriol, with Nikk Fail's own particular brand of snarling vocals spelling out his villainous hubris in a way that is bound to get you off your feet and moving to the beat. "Sirens" is equally moving in its aggressiveness, but again, has a club friendly feel that could easily find itself being played in the underground venues that cater to the scene. Finally, closing track "Serial K.G." brings us to a satisfying, and logical conclusion, based on the earlier movements of the EP as a whole. Evoking imagery of films like Blade Runner or Logan's Run, "Futuro Presente" is an incredibly fun and interesting listening experience, proving the Nikk Fail could become the face of the future in the present.
Standout Track: "Supervillain".
