Neon Funeral, "A Void" Single Review

There are certain things in this world that typically do not mix. Water and oil, for example. But...give it a little bit of effort, and one can end up with a stable emulsion, uniting two unlike things into one cohesive mix. Jersey City's own Neon Funeral does just this, by combining pulsing Dark Wave with the harsh intensity of Hardcore/Metalcore. Two completely different genres, both of which one would rarely mention in the same sentence, let alone see in the same scene together. But here's the thing: Neon Funeral makes it work. Not only that, they make it work masterfully, as if the two just naturally belong together. And neither side of the mix outdoes the other. Randy Robertson's roaring vocals intertwine with the rest of the instrumentals in a way that just makes sense, balancing each other out. As someone who was always "too metal for the goth crowd" while simultaneously being "too goth for the metal crowd", Neon Funeral resonates with me in a way that not many will understand. "A Void" definitely fills the void for something that I did not know I needed until I listened to it.
