Nebulae Complex, "Byrozoan Operator" EP Review

Solo experimental electro/industrial act, Nebulae Complex, brings us to a completely new realm of existence on his new EP, "Byrozoan Operator". Inspired by the depths of the sea, and it's almost-alien life that inhabits its darkness, Nebulae Complex takes his listeners on a journey through uncharted territories. Beginning with opening track "Airroot", we find ourselves surrounded by soundscapes that are lush and provocative, strange yet simultaneously familiar. "Airroot" is full of the sounds that made early industrial great, as syntesizers build on a danceable beat, yet is devoid of the aggressive tendencies of modern industrial. Through five songs, the pace does start to quicken, and the sounds become more modernized in their delivery without edging into Aggrotech territory. Yet the devotion to the old-school remains pervasive throughout the journey that Nebulae Complex takes us on. "Rounded Bolthead" and closing track "Operand" carry nods to Ministry and New Order, all without losing the uniqueness that makes this EP so incredible. The marriage between retro and modern into one cohesive sound that is then made so alien is truly a feat that should not go unnoticed by the scene as a whole.

Standout Track: "Airroot", the ambience would make Clan of Xymox and Skinny Puppy proud.
