Malice Machine, "Hyena" Single Review

Self described aggro-punk duo, Malice Machine, has unleashed a new single ahead of their forthcoming album, "Act of Self Destruction", and it absolutely rips. Consisting of Syn and Julie-X, "Hyena" is as aggressive as its namesake animal, relentless until the last second. Starting off with an ominous sound bite, the bass and synths kick in like a bomb. Utterly foreboding, the low ended electronics build an atmosphere that is electric with dread, as the mid-tempo percussion plays out a death march. All of these elements combine to provide the skeleton in which Syn lays his sinister vocals on, fleshing out the rest of the beast in a fantastically wicked fashion. The best part of his vocal performance is that, harsh though it may be, it is not drowned to hell and back in distortion, and the listener can still make out every word. "Hyena" is also not lacking in any sense of musicality; there is plenty of melody in the din, which is often overlooked in the harsher industrial and aggrotech genres. If "Hyena" is a sign of things to come, we are looking to get destroyed beautifully once "Act of Self Destruction" comes out in mid April.
