Livernois, "Ablation" EP Review

Something wicked this way comes, something dark and beautifully noisy. New Orleans is a breeding ground for all things that go bump in the night, and Livernois fits right in. Their EP, "Ablation" is a study in moody, mid-tempo electro/industrial, that is ripe with dark and brooding atmospheres; perfect for traversing through the vampire and haunt filled night life of Louisiana. "Beyond the Gate" opens the EP with booming bass and wheezing electronics, that soon give way to metallic guitars and snarling vocals. The drum parts are pounding and relentless, sounding more organic than synthesized, lending a more punishing aspect to Livernois' overall sound. "Tearcatcher Pt. II" and its counterpart "Tearcatcher Pt. I" are odes to the best of late 90's industrial, leaning heavily into the sound popularized by bands like Gravity Kills, and I, Parasite. "Tit For Tat" is atmospheric, grinding, and mesmerizingly danceable, with a bass line that just doesn't quit. The guitars, drums, and electronics really take over during the second movement of the song, taking on a jungle beat/drum and bass quality that is as unexpected as it is satisfying. Ending the EP is the fire and brimstone track, "Hekk Closet". The vocals take on a screeched and howled aspect, displaying some black metal influences juxtaposed by a trap style beat. The guitars and electronics blaze beautifully on top of all the din, to thoroughly round out focused chaos, creating a spectacular ending. If "Ablation" is a sign of things to come for Livernois, the scene needs to make way for a new force of nature to come sweeping in.

Standout Tracks: "Tearcatcher Pt. I" and "Tearcatcher Pt.II"
