Death, loss, loneliness, and the sadness that come with, are the the themes explored in the new album "Sorrows" by the Texas trio In A Darkened Room. Written during the height of the covid-19 pandemic, a time in which death and isolation were the new normal, as the world collectively mourned its losses. The 8-song LP plays like a funeral dirge; "Descend", the opening track, does an incredible job of setting the mood, evoking images of graveyards and gray days. "Final Vows" kicks up the tempo slightly, and has all the makings of what makes Post-punk/Darkwave music great. Guitars that jangle (but are not glitzy or glittery at all), pounding drums, and foreboding basslines, all swirl around front man CJ Duron's ominous baritone voice. Each track feels more and more like an individual delivering a eulogy, leading to the album's climax "Water Under The Bridge". Starting and ending with a cadence of drums, the song marches the listener to a most satisfying conclusion. Through some of the bleakest soundscapes this writer has heard in a while, "Sorrows" is exactly as the title suggests, and In A Darkened Room does not fail to deliver such beautiful gloom.
Standout Tracks: "Final Vows" and "Water Under The Bridge".
