Häxa, "Priestess" EP Review

Bridging the gap between the mystical and technological, Chicago witch-house act, Häxa have released a stunning new EP, "Priestess". Drawing on mysticism from paganism, the dark duo beautifully juxtapose nature with the droning electronics synonymous with the genre. The EP contains 3 new songs, as well as remixes of two of the tracks, featuring MONOMORTE, CULTCHILD, Jaywalker, Deipnon, and Spook-E. "Manen" is a swirling and ethereal take on witch-house, trading in the creepy and sludgy ambience for an aural tapestry of dreamy vocals accompanied by airy electronic compositions. "P4n1¢" is an equally ethereal number, which tackles the subject of experiencing symptoms of anxiety, or the feeling of free falling associated with panic attacks. Despite the subject matter, it is again juxtaposed by Häxa's incredible atmospheric arrangements, lending an air of calm to its polar opposite emotion. "The Hex" sees a return to more traditional witch-house, as grungy guitars tread on top of a trap style beat. MONOMORTE's remix of "Manen" is drenched in synths, and feels a lot like the territory that The Birthday Massacre frequents. CULTCHILD's remix of "P4n1¢" is likewise a synth-heavy offering, lending a dark and bass heavy air to the track. The other three remixes of "Manen" see each artist take the song into a more dubstep influenced direction, complete with the trademark "Wub" and beat drops. The most unique thing about "Priestess" is vocalist Heather's performance. Her voice is so soothing, harmonious, and calming, especially for a genre that tends to be more jarring. Overall, an incredible release from a very intriguing group. Häxa and "Priestess" are definitely worthy of being on radar for club play, and are poised for great things in the scene.

Standout Track: "P4n1¢".
