Guro, "Beloved Static" EP Review

Making waves in their respective music scene, St. Joseph, Missouri's self-ascribed doomgaze outfit, Guro has released their first EP into the world. Though only 3 songs long, and coming in under 20 minutes, it is enough to offer their listeners a glimpse into the haunting realm they have crafted. Fusing the sludgy, buzzing riffs and pounding percussion of doom metal with the etherealness of dream pop and shoegaze, Guro spins an intriguing net of noise that is equally pleasant and perplexing. Beginning with "Goddess", shimmering keys give way beautifully discordant guitars, setting the tone for the rest of the EP. At times, Guro steps into territory reminiscent of the Deftones, but Chino Moreno's voice is replaced to crooning that is so similar to The Church's Steve Kilby. The EP reaches a satisfying finale on the ending track, "Shameful Kiss". After their signature distortion fades away, we are treated to a surprise bit of electronica that dances its way to a climax, leaving the listener in a state of wanting more. Overall, this EP, though short and sweet, is a wonderful taste of what Guro is capable of. Here's to looking forward to more from such an exciting new band.

Standout Track: "Bliss".
