Damned to Downfall, "Slavery For You" EP Review

What do you get when you combine the extreme aggression of metal and the assaultive soundscapes of industrial? Damned to Downfall take the best of each and blend it into a vicious concoction of their own. Hailing from Karlskona, Sweden, the trio bring a blackened approach to the metal aspect of their sound. Blistering, intricate blast-beats accompany blazing riffs, while Marcus Dahl's hissing shrieks and growls deliver a sermon of brutality. The use of keys and synths, while it has been done before, is still unique, as Damned to Downfall choose to utilize them in a more industrial/electro style, opting to not go in the more common symphonic direction. The band's black metal influence is made apparent in "When Everything Dies". Discordant guitar chords permeate the tone of the song, lending a certain iciness to the soundscape as cold as the dead of winter. "Rings Of Steel" really showcases the band's ability to move a crowd, as the pounding rhythm section combined with the synths will make you want to stomp as much as well as mosh. Again, it must be noted the way Damned to Downfall use their keyboards. When most bands have this element in their music, it is so easy to assume that they have gone in the path of least resistance like Dimmu Borgir, or Lorna Shore. The Aggrotech approach that Damned to Downfall uses is truly a breath of fresh air in a genre that has a tendency to grow complacent and stagnate.

Standout Tracks: "Breed Of Insanity" and "When Everything Dies"
