Copy of I Ya Toyah, "I Am The Fire" EP Review

The force of nature known as I Ya Toyah is back at it with a brand new EP, "I Am The Fire", and it is exactly that: pure fire. Unrelentingly ferocious in both musical composition and I Ya Toyah's explosive vocal attack, we are treated to 3 brand new songs and 2 remixes. "Panic Room" evokes a feeling of claustrophobic urgency from start to breathtaking finish. Pounding percussion and thumping bass accompany buzz saw guitar riffs and hard industrial electronics, while the vocals soar and scream, creating the perfect sense of white-knuckle panic that the lyrics are written about. "Dream not to Dream" is a more focused, dance-worthy offering, full of poppy and catchy hooks. The club beat and lush electronics provide the perfect tapestry for her to let her searing vocals paint their story on. Title track, "I am the Fire", proves once again why I Ya Toyah is a one-woman army that is utterly unstoppable. Crunchy guitars and vicious rhythms provide the backdrop for one of the most anthemic choruses that has come out this year, as I Ya Toyah tells you exactly what she is. The 3 songs alone are the grounds of an incredible EP; the remixes are a most welcome treat, featuring Chris Hall of Stabbing Westward, and The Anix. "I am the Fire" is such a strong offering, and is hopefully a taste of what is to come from I Ya Toyah, as she continues to make it known that she is not to be underestimated.

Standout Tracks: "Panic Room" both the original and The Anix remix.
