While the world is currently enraptured with Spiritbox (and for good reason; "Ultraviolet" is a stunning release!), the wrecking crew from Portland, OR, has largely gone unsung, but is starting to gain the momentum that they deserve. From being relatively unknown, to sharing the stage on Lamb of God's cruise ship, to selling out several venues on their first headlining tour, Dying Wish is proving to be a force to be reckoned with. The best thing about "Symptoms of Survival" is the sheer amount of growth that the band went through from their last album till now. The music is a study of melodic and metallic harcore that is both brutal and beautiful, and full of DIY punk energy that is devoid of studio trickery and over-processed mastering; a polished rawness if you will. But the biggest amount of growth is shown in frontwoman Emma Boster's vocal performance. The strength of her primal screams is matched by the intensity of her clean vocals, which have become more prominent in the band's sound. With this trajectory, Emma and Dying Wish are well on their way to becoming iconic.
Outstanding track: "Path to Your Grave".
